My Mental Flexicon is a game by Complex Science Consulting, a scientific consulting brand focusing on cognitive models of language (www.compscicons.net).
The "mental flexicon" is a challenge aimed at training linguistic skills, a bit like going to the gym for training the body. The mental training here does not use weights but rather visual and semantic cues for eliciting the translation of English words into Italian.
The game is heavily data-informed: all English/Italian word pairs share some similarities in the ways they are written or pronounced, facilitating the translation process. Also, the visual features of pictures and the semantic content of definitions are clustered together through machine learning, so that translations happen within specific semantic areas (for instance, words related to the ocean are presented one after another).
These two psycholinguistic effects facilitate word processing and translation but they disappear at higher levels, thus making the challenge much more fierce!
Almost all the words in this app are highly relevant for word processing in the so-called mental lexicon, the cognitive system apt at language processing (cf. Stella et al., Sci. Rep., 2018) and are therefore of relevance for any English speaker interested in learning Italian in a strategic way.
